There are many different types of dental restorations to choose from these days, although some of them look pretty similar! Crowns and fillings, for example, are often confused for each other. Both help repair and protect your smile, but are nevertheless used for different oral situations. If you’re wondering which restoration you might need for your pearly whites, keep reading. This post will cover the differences between the two!
Main Differences
Dental crowns and fillings have three main differences between them. Don’t worry – they’re not overly complicated, and you don’t have to be a rocket scientist (or a dentist) to understand what makes them unique.
The Way They Look
Crowns and fillings have distinctive designs. A crown looks more tooth-like, can be made from a variety of materials, such as gold or zirconia, and has a hollow center so it can fit over a damaged tooth. Fillings, on the other hand, are actually made from a composite resin and are moldable. They’ll take whatever shape is needed to restore your pearly whites.
How They Fit
As hinted at, crowns are meant to fit over a tooth, kind of like a cap. They provide complete 360 degree coverage! The moldable nature of fillings, meanwhile, allows the material to “fill in” cavities and other deep pockets of damage. So a filling will fit inside of your tooth instead of on top of it.
What They’re Used For
Generally speaking, crowns are best suited for protecting severely damaged teeth from bacteria and further harm. Fillings make more sense for patients with cavities or minor chips and cracks.
How Do I Know Which One is Right for Me?
The extent of your dental damage can give you a pretty good idea of which restoration might be needed for your smile. However, only a dentist will know for sure! To find out whether a crown or filling is right for you, schedule a consultation with your friendly neighborhood dentist. After a thorough examination, they’ll be able to recommend the best solution for your oral health needs.
